Vacuum degasser as the second stage solids control equipment is mainly use to remove gas immerged in mud. It is usually set up between shale shaker and mud cleaner/desander. It ensures proper mud weight pumped down well to prevent potential blowout in drilling. It is a very important equipment in degassing process.

How can you make vacuum degasser separate gas efficiently in drilling mud?

We know, the bubbles in drilling fluids should expose on the surface, will rapidly swell and fracture in the negative pressure condition. Gas cutting drilling fluid will remain a certain times in separation chamber. After gas cutting enter into separation chamber will present the turbulent condition flowing. So the degassing effect decided by the reasonable control of vacuum, the remaining times of gas cutting drilling fluids in degassing chamber and the turbulent condition in degassing chamber.

Degassing chamber vacuum is higher, the bubbles received the expansionary force in drilling fluids is bigger, the volume expansion is bigger, drilling fluids give the buoyancy is bigger, then bubbles are easy float to the drilling fluid surface to broken.

So an efficient vacuum degasser is essential to the safe and productive drilling operations. Since gas is practically insoluble in water, it is relatively easy to detect and remove. By comparison, gas is easily soluble in oilbase muds – its detection is more difficult as well as its removal. Regardless of the composition of the gas encountered, gas existing in the mud can decrease efficiencies in rig pumps, centrifugal pumps and associated operational equipment. The goal is to “Keep the pumps Operating”.
