In the drilling fluid solids control system, we often see the mud gun installed inner the mud tank.

KOSUN Mud Gun

Mud guns are meant to provide supplemental or primary mixing in mud tanks depending on the number being used and the pit size. They are usually used in the corner of the tank to keep solids from settling while a mud agitator is placed in the center of the tank. The mud gun in the mud system is also used for transfer mud from compartment to compartment, like for trip tank compartment.

Though it is simple in structure, it plays an irreplaceable role in the system.

First, it is applied together with mud agitator to prevent the mud precipitating so that the homogeneous mud could be transferred or treated. Mud gun could spray the mud to the tank corner which the mud agitator can’t reach.

Second, the active mud could be added in the selected tank through the mud gun pipeline.

In different mud system, the power source of mud gun is different either. In general condition, for the mud system for oil drilling rig and work-over rig, the mud gun is often driven by mud pump, the pressure is higher. While in small mud system for HDD and CBM, no needing the mud pump. Therefore, the mixing pump will be used as the mud gun source. Correspondingly, the pressure is lower.

Sometime, if the inner space of the tank is not large enough, we only choose one of the mud gun and agitator, it all depends on our purpose. For example, in the small pill tank, we only install one unit mud agitator.

We should choose the mud gun of the corresponding pressure according to the detail requirements and situation in the practice.
