Decanter centrifuge is used to effectively control solids particles in the drilling fluids, as a very important solids control equipment for oil & gas drilling. Usually at least 2 sets decanter centrifuge should be used for 1 drilling rig.
The first centrifuge with middle speed is used for recovery barite. Barite is an expensive material for drilling mud. A good barite recovery centrifuge can help to reduce drilling cost.
The second centrifuge will be used for treatment of the drilling cuttings. Usually, for OBM and SBM, it is used after vertical cuttings dryer. For WBM, after high-G dryer. It is used to cover useful drilling mud from drilling cuttings.
Horizontal Centrifuge
What is the solids separation principle of drilling fluid horizontal centrifuge? We will understand it from two aspects.
a. Gravity separation of decanter centrifuge
On account of difference in density, the mixed liquid in the container, after a period of time, is gradually divided into 2 layers. The heavy phase particle of the mixed liquid deposits to the bottom of the container, while the light phase one suspends to the upper surface. A rather distinctive dividing plane forms between the light and heavy phases. The separation speed is affected by the difference in density between the light and heavy phases that make up the mixed liquid. The larger the difference in density is, the faster the separation speed will be.
b. Centrifugal separation of decanter centrifuge
When the container filled with mixed liquid rotates at high speed around its own axis, due to the difference in density between the two phases making up the mixed liquid, they bear different centrifugal force. Under the action of a larger centrifugal force, the heavy phase in the mixed liquid quickly subsides on the inner wall of the drum, while the light phase slowly adhere close to the surface of heavy phase. The faster the container rotates, the larger the difference in centrifugal force borne by the light and heavy phases that make up the mixed liquid, and the faster the separation speed. When the container is equipped with such parts as feeding mainly comprised of such parts as drum, helical propeller, planet gear differential mechanism, pedestal, hood and lubricating system.
